I believe there is a person inside of us that really wants to be realized and be allowed to thrive. That person is who we truly are. Unfortunately, we are not always free to be completely ourselves. Different obstacles can stand in the way of us becoming who we need to be. I believe that my role in the counseling relationship is to try and help a person identify who they need to become and find ways to overcome the obstacles that stand in the way.

I tend to focus on the way we see ourselves and the world in an attempt to alter them to something that helps us grow instead of hold us back. The stories we tell about ourselves become very important. As we rewrite your story, new avenues for growth can appear. Since our stories often include others, families, as well as other social supports, are very important in the work that we do. We can include these other individuals in our work, even if it is just to talk about their roles in our lives.

That’s something I think is growing on me as I get older : happy endings.
